James R. Jones, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas

I am looking for information about the parents or siblings of my second great grandfather James R. Jones, who, according to censuses, was born in Tennessee between 1816-18. He died in Leavenworth Co., Ks., in 1865.

The first I have on him is that in August 1846 he hired on as a teamster in the Army Quartermaster's department to take supplies to Santa Fe during the Mexican War. He returned to Ft. Leavenworth in May 1847 and was honorably discharged. (This is according to his 1855 application for bounty land for his Mexican War service.) I have nothing on him before 1846.

In Dec 1847 (or possibly as early as July 1847 according to one source)he married in Platte County, Mo., Elizabeth Miller (nee Martin). She was the widow of Isaac Miller, who was James Jones' wagonmaster on the Santa Fe trail and who reputedly died on the journey. Elizabeth Martin Miller had 5 daughters by Isaac Miller.

James Jones is next seen on the Platte County, Mo., tax lists for 1849 (he is not on the list for 1847) and is in the 1850 census in Marshall township, Platte County, living with Elizabeth, their first child Louisa and four of the Miller girls--Sarah A., Martha J., Minerva, and Catherine. Miller daughter Eveline was not listed with them. The Jones' lived near Elizabeth's father George Martin.

In 1855, living in Leavenworth Co., Ks., or at least present there in Kickapoo township, he made application for bounty land, which he eventually got--160 acres.

In the 1860 census, he and Elizabeth are found in Kickapoo, Leavenworth County, Ks., with two of the Miller girls--Minerva and Catherine--and now six Jones children: Louisa, Eliza, John R., Samuel, Dolley, and Henry R. Henry R. Jones is my great grandfather. They are also on the 1865 Kansas state census and then James R. Jones died in 1865 and Elizabeth in 1866.

Does anyone have this James R. Jones in any records prior to 1846 in Missouri or Tennessee? Thank you.
