I'm looking for my great-great grandfather. The family story is that he was conscripted into the Civil War (Union, we think, but not sure. Also don't know if Infantry or Cavalry) in Virginia. In Anderson County, TN, his unit was ambushed at a creek. Richard played dead, floated downstream, decided he'd had enough of being shot at and deserted. That's the family tale, anyway. Officially, Richard was listed as being born in Virginia, with both parents from Virginia. He married Sarah E. Davis (who was born in 1849) and Richard is listed in the 1870 census as living at Wallace Crossing, as a farmer, in Anderson County TN. His personal effects were valued at $330. Hmm... allowing for inflation, the family fortunes have only slightly improved over the intervening century+! He and Sarah had three children: John E., Clena A. (C.A. Crawford, my great-grandfather) and William H. ("Hen" Crawford) as listed in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Sadly, it appears their records for 1890 were lost in the fire. Apparently, between 1880 and 1900, Sarah died and Richard remarried a woman named Parlie (Parley), birth name unknown, who may have been Stooksbury. Parlie is listed as born June 1866 and being 33 at the time of the census. Richard was then 56. Richard and Parlie had three children at the time of the 1900 census: Thomas G., born March 1888; Rossie(sp ? female) August 1881, and Stella A. born June 1898. In the 1910 census, Stella is the only child listed, and Parlie is recorded as having 4 children, with three living. Richard appears in the 1920 census, and I believe his wife is still Parlie, because of the age listed and the number of years married, but the name doesn't "look" like Parlie and is, to me, illegible. I couldn't find either of them in the 1930 census. They lived their entire lives in Anderson County, TN. If anyone has any information on Richard's parents, most especially his truncated military service, any death dates or obituaries for him, Sarah, or Parlie-- basically, any information at all-- I'd be most grateful. Thank you, Theresa Melton, nee Crawford Notify Administrator about this message?
