Thanks Sue for the info. The marriage in August 1853 is documented -- I've seen a scanned copy of the page that was filled out when they applied to get married. If you go to Rhea County marriages, you will find it. I've also run across info that "Serena" is a nickname for "Arena", "Irena", "Sarah", etc. There's no telling what her real name was. And William Davis apparently had the first name of Lewis from what I've been able to find. He was called William probably b/c maybe his dad was "Lewis". There is a William S. Davis in eastern Tennessee that is a little younger than my gg-grandfather and that may have been who you found marrying someone else. My gg-grandfather went by William S. Davis later on in life so I'm not sure what the difference in names means -- maybe they eloped and didn't want to be found. There's speculation that Serena had Indian blood and that was a no-no back then to cross racial boundaries. Who knows but thanks for your help.
