GIRL QUADS BORN IN TENNESSEE THREE OF FOUR BABIES EXPECTED BY DOCTOR TO REMAIN ALIVE. Chattagnooga, Tenn, Jan 13th.1947 by the light of a miner's lamp, quadruplets were born early Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. Jess Moore in their small wooden shack while the couple's other five children slept in the same room. The last of the quadruplets was still born. The other three, all girls, are in a clinic at Sequatchie, Tenn;, and are expected to live. Dr. Tom Johnston of Sequatchie delivered the quads in 51 minutes. Jessica, the oldest, weighed six and one-quarter pounds. The other two, Ruby and Dilly, each weighed five and three-quarter pounds. Ruby (Mrs. Moore) gritted her teeth and didn't even say 'boo' during the delivery. Dr. Johnston reported. Mrs. moore, who had no prenatal care, was reported resting comfortably tonight. She is five feet tall and weighs 100 pounds. The sets of twins previously were born to Mrs. Moore but one of each set died at birth. Informed by the doctor of his fortune, the father, who drives a mule at a coal mine, whistled and simply said, "Dawggone." Dr. Johnston, who practices under a naturopathic license, related that when he answered a "frantic call" from a neighbor to hurry to the Moore home at the foot of Suck Creek Mountain in Sequatchie Valley, he found Mrs. Moore lying on a straw mattress unadorned by sheets or blankets. "There was no electricity in the cabin and no cooking pots to heat water," the doctor said. "The mother was in a toxic condition and her face was all swollen. Her blood pressure was 240" Mrs. Johnston, the doctor's wife, a registered nurse, procured the necessities from a neighbor and at 12:55 a.m. the first baby was born. A gas miner's lamp provided the only illumination in the cabin. The hot water was heated in buckets. This article comes from an old newspaper from Jan., 13th 1947 of the Daily Mail, Hagerstown, MD.
