I'm trying to break a brick wall on my great-great grandparents. Allen Gunter was supposedly born in "Middle Tennessee". Census reports vary on birth year from 1839 to 1848, but in 1900 it indicated he was born January 1839. He married in Monroe County, Mississippi in 1865 to Nancy Ann Bailey. Allen and Nancy lived in Monroe County MS area but traveled periodically back up to Tennessee, evidently to visit Allen's family. One of their children, William Everett who was born in 1887, said their last visit was when he was 9 years old. He also said they traveled up the Natchez Trace. That would put their last visit around 1896. The 1870 census lists Allen and his wife Nancy with their oldest daughter, Nancy E who was about 1 month old at that time. Allen was listed as a farm worker. This census was in District 6 of Perry County, Linden post office. Problem is that they had a Susan Elizabeth born in May 1870 and their daughter Nancy Jane's dates are May 1868 to Nov 1868. It is strongly believed that the census worker wrote down the wrong name. I have not found Allen prior to 1870 anywhere as yet. Don't know if I'm not looking in the right place or if he had some really mean yard dogs that scared off the census taker or if he just hid from government officials. in 1862, the Federal Tax lists has property parcel of 596 acres belonging to a William Gunter. I have no other information. Allen and Nancy had 11 children, two of whom died as infants and were buried "near the Tennessee state line", presumably TN and MS/AL. 1. Nancy Jane 1868-1868 2. Susan Elizabeth 1870-1956 3. John Adair 1872-1853 4. Samuel W 1876-1945 5. Andrew Jackson 1878-1954 6. Josephine 1881-1955 7. Mary L 1883-1884 8. Martha E 1885-1949 9. William Everett 1887-1965 10. Maggie Lee 1890-1963 11. Emma Ola 1892-1956 I don't have a clue what or where to look for info in Perry County. Any and all help would be more than appreciated. I did find the Gunter Cemetery listing in Perry County, but I suspect if any of the above children are buried there they no longer have tombstones. I live several hours south of Perry County with no way to visit there any time soon. So .... does anyone have any clues on my guys? Or the William Gunter with the property in 1862? If I remember, my mom found the property at the lower SW corner of Perry County in the loop area of the TN river. This family's parentage has been a brick wall for decades and I'd really, REALLY like to find out who Allen's parents are. There is a William Gunter in Cannon County, TN, whose children bear a striking resemblence to names in Allen's descendants. But Cannon isn't exactly next door to Perry County. If any of this sounds familiar or is your family, I'd love to make contact. I may not answer your emails immediately, but I will answer. I'd be happy to share what little I do know. Thanks so very much! Wishing you success beyond measure in your own endeavors, Mary Notify Administrator about this message?
