Dear Mr. Lannom,
I am responding to the message you posted on the Rutherford Co. message board, and to the question you sent me about “Mary, wife of Isaac Sanders”
QUESTION – How do you connect to Mary Lannom Sanders???????
Names in your message:
Re: Isaac Summers Sanders who married Mary Jane RICHMOND
Re: Thomas Marion Sanders who married Martha GREGORY
These were the sons of Mary LANNOM and Thomas Summers Sanders
Please consider the documentation I site in items 1 thru 8 below
1. I think you have Mary Lannom married to the wrong Sanders
From Rutherford Co. Marriage records, found online at
Polly (Mary) Lannom married Thomas (Summers) Sanders April 19, 1821
Thomas Summers Sanders was the son of my own direct ancestors
Isaac Sanders, Sr., who was born abt 1772 in NC, died 1860 in Rutherford Co.,
and his wife Mary UNKNOWN, who died 1856 in Rutherford Co.
Mary Unknown, born abt 1778, was the ONLY wife of Isaac Sanders, Sr. and they are found together, as an elderly couple, on the 1850 census of Rutherford, and buried together as noted below.
I know that there is someone, not a direct Sanders descendant, who has posted on ancestry.com Family Trees that Isaac Sanders, Sr. had as a 2nd wife Mary Lannom – even tho they do not offer any source documentation to back up this untrue claim.
Note – all of my sources spell this middle name as Summers, not Sumners
2. First a little background:
The Sanders of Rutherford Co. are a confusing family in that they repeatedly used the same 1st names for their children, particularly Isaac, William Meredith, Cornelius, John, Thomas, Sarah and Mary.
Also they seemed to marry a lot of Mary’s whose maiden names are unknown.
The Sanders of Rutherford Co. descend from six of the sons of:
Thomas Sanders born abt 1730 in Chowan Co. NC, died 1801 in Edgecombe Co. NC,
and his wife Sarah JORDAN, daughter of Cornelius JORDAN and Mary DANIEL.
The sons who came to Rutherford Co. (by 1805 per 1st Deed found) were:
Thomas Sanders, who died 1807 in Rutherford Co., wife was Rachael WOODWARD
Cornelius Sanders, who died 1854 in Rutherford Co., wife was a Mary Unknown
Luke Sanders, who died after 1808 in Rutherford Co.
Elisha Sanders, who died after 1821 in Rutherford Co.
Isaac Sanders, Sr., who died 1860 in Rutherford Co., wife was another Mary Unknown
(Isaac was the administrator of his father Thomas’s estate prior to moving to Rutherford Co.)
By 1850, there were supposed to have been 140 descendants of these 6 brothers living in Rutherford County.
3. The following information is found in the book,
“Rutherford County Historical Society Publication No. 6”, published Winter 1976
Chapter titled, “The Sanders Family of the Old First District of Rutherford County”, by Christine Sanders Farrar, pages 80 – 89,
(Note – the author was also a descendants of Isaac Sanders, Sr. thru his son
Asa Houston Sanders, and a noted historical researcher and genealogist.)
Chapter titled, “Historical Notes on Fellowship Church and Community”, by Christine Sanders Farrar, pages 75 – 79
QUOTE: The home of Thomas Sanders, oldest son of Isaac and Mary, was on Stones River at Spring Creek where a gristmill was operated by water power. Later a stave and hoop mill was operated by steam power where a Mr. McKennon lost his life by getting a leg caught in a shaft. The old home still stands and was occupied by a son,
ISAAC SUMMERS SANDERS, until his death in 1915. Isaac Summer Sanders married Mary Jane Richmond, daughter of Dr. John Richmond of Wilson County.
Next few paragraphs discuss the sons of Isaac Summer Sanders and Mary Jane Richmond:
Daniel Thomas Sanders who married Almeda C. WORD Dec 17, 1873 in Wilson Co.
Dr. Robley Elwood Sanders who married Annie RANDOLPH
Charles Lenord Sanders who married Mary BOND
John Richmond Sanders who married Mary Francis JONES
QUOTE: THOMAS MARION SANDERS, third son of Thomas and Mary LANNOM Sanders, married Martha GREGORY and moved to a farm north of Smyrna on the Nashville Highway. He was named for his (great) grandfather Thomas and Gen. Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox” of the American Revolution, under whom he (the ancestor) had fought. Thomas Marion Sanders was a Confederate Soldier quartermaster in the TN Volunteers.
Next few paragraphs discuss sons of Thomas Marion Sanders and Martha Gregory:
Dr. Evander (Van) McIver Sanders, born July 18, 1875, wife Sarah H.
Leonard Sanders who married Clara NORTHWAY
Thomas Gregory Sanders who married Francis KIMBLE
The rest of this chapter discusses the OTHER children of Isaac, Sr. (born 1772 in NC) and Mary Unknown Sanders:
Wiley Sanders (my ancestor) who married 1st Martha HART, 2nd Virginia RUCKER
Asa Houston Sanders who married Christine CLEMMONS
Isaac Sanders, Jr. who married Sallie MITCHELL

5. From the book, “Index to Rutherford Co. TN Wills, 1802-1861”
* Thomas Sanders had records in Probate in 1845
You can order a copy of his Will from the Rutherford Co. Archives for about 50c per page.
Also I know nothing about the other children of Mary Lannom Sanders, that you listed in your post, except that some of them are found in the household of the widowed Mary on the 1850 census of Rutherford County.
Perhaps Thomas’s Will will clarify that.
Also, according to the book quoted above, Thomas’s brother, William Meredith Sanders, was the Guardian of “Thomas’s nine minor children”
Also the abstract of the Will of Isaac Sanders, Sr., written Nov 15, 1852, and filed April 5, 1860, mentions: wife Mary, sons Asa Houston, William Meredith, Wiley, Isaac, John,
and the “heirs of Thomas Sanders”, ………
(note – At the moment, I can’t find my copy of this Will but you could also order a copy of it too)
6. Re Thomas Marion Sanders, son of Mary Lannom and Thomas Sanders
On the 1850 census, Thos. M. was age 14 (born abt 1836).
His Death Record can be found at
Sanders, Thomas, age 90, died Feb 27, 1925, father Tom Sanders, mother unknown, buried Maple View
His tombstone reads:
Thomas Marion Sanders
Confederate Soldier Quartermaster
Forty-fifth Tenn Volunteers
Maple View Cemetery
Thomas M. Sanders was 1st Sergeant in Co. E., 45 Regiment, CSA Infantry
His Service Records, available from the National Archives in Washington, D. C., are recorded on Film M231, Roll 38
7. Re Isaac Summers Sanders (Senior)
The following Death Record, found at the same link, is probably Isaac Summers Sanders,
who death year was noted in the book above as being 1915:
Sanders, I. S., born August 1825, died April 29, 1915, parents unknown, buried
Isaac Summers Sanders and Mary Jane Richmond has a son named Isaac S., born 1854, who married a Lucy E. Sanders in 1873.
Isaac S. Sanders and Lucy E. Sanders had a daughter named Clara E. born Aug 1876, who married Robert Frank Peyton.
I have a photo of Clara E. Sanders Peyton, great granddaughter of Thomas and Mary Lannom Sanders.
Let me know if you would like a copy.
8. Re - The OTHER children of Mary Lannom and Thomas Sanders
Since Mary died in 1856, the children Lenard N., Sarah A., and John A. (shown with her on the 1850 census), if they survived her, would have become MINOR Orphans and would have needed to have Guardians appointed.
I suggest that you contact the Rutherford County Archives to request a lookup about them in the Guardianship Records for 1845 thru 1870.
For information about requesting lookups, go to
Please let me know what you think about this information.
Let me know if you want copies of the pages from the “Historical Publication” cited, or if you would like to see the other tombstones listed as being buried in the same Sanders Cemetery with Isaac, Sr., his wife Mary, and Thomas and his wife Mary.
ALSO, if you do send off for copies of Thomas Sanders WILL and the Guardianship Records of his minor children, I would really appreciate it if you would PLEASE share that information with me for my own files.
I would be happy to share with you further information about the other children and descendants of Isaac Sanders, Sr.
Hope this helps.
