I am doing a research project about the Free Persons of Color in Rutherford Co. TN. I am not related to the Rouse family.
As part of my research, I have obtained copies of the "Certificates of Freedom" for the following persons named ROUSE:
Isaac
Edmond, son of James and Mary
Richard
Thomas, son of Lucy
Martha and Manerva, daughters of Sally, and Manerva's 5 year old son
Ezekiel, son of Edmond and Sally
The Certificate of Freedom documents contain a physical description of each individual - skin color, height, build, hair, scars, etc. These individuals are clearly described as people of color of African, not Indian, descent.
