“My husband’s mother was a Bird of the Samuel Bird/Hannah Lawson family. Her father was the son of this family, brother to the Hettie Bird that Ray Bachelor is from. ...

“You wanted to hear about the “German Farmer” My mother in law Ina Bird Dunlap told me the story.

“Her father lived with them for 13 years and one day a man called him and wanted to come visit. Ina said she heard her father say ‘if you come out here and step on this porch I’ll take my cane and beat you up.’ She was such a sweet person and was so surprised that her father said something like this she ask him who he was talking to and he told her. Said he was so mean to children that lived with him that he would beat him if he came out to see him. He told her that the children didn’t get enough to eat and what they did was only the left overs and that they were not allowed to eat with the family. They were treated as hired help.

“His father died during the civil war. I have not found that he was in the service as yet. Could have been. Then his mother became ill and before she died she gave the children to the German Farmer/1/ thinking that they would have a good home.

“The older boys told the ones that were at the farmers they would come and get them and to meet them at the river at midnight and they were all coming to Texas. I know that Thomas came but I do not know about the others.

“There were 11 children in the family when the mother died. Most were old enough to be alone but the 3 youngest were given away.

“That was the the story that Thomas told. We also talked to one of Ina’s cousins and the story he said his mother told was this.

“Her name was Mary Caroline Bird and she married a Blevins. She was born in 1862 in Newhaven. Mo. This was what she told him.

“At the age of 4 her father died and left the mother as the supporter of 11 children. but about the age of 6 he mother died. Most of the 11 children were old enough to make their living, but there were 3 left to be given away to one family, but later Willy was taken by another family and didn’t come back until he was seven years old. She stayed with these folks for 10 years and at the age of 16 she started for Texas. She came on a train and it took her 3 days, but the rest were on the wagons and it took them six weeks or more.’”

Thanks,

Ruth Dunlap

Samuel Bird, then, died in 1866 when Mary Caroline Bird was four years old; her mother died in 1868, when Mary Caroline was six years old. If Coveys of Birds is correct, Samuel Bird was descended from a German ancestor, an ancestry that might be connected to the Walton family to whom Hannah Bird “gave” her children.

/1/ As shown above, some of Hannah's children were enumerated in the household of Hamden Olney Walton, so he has been taken to be the "German farmer". The following biograph of Hamden Walton is found in the Goodspeed History of Franklin County, Missouri:

"Hamden O. Walton, one of the oldest living settlers of Franklin County, Mo., is the son of William and Susan (Wash) Walton, both of whom were natives of Virginia, where they were reared within a mile of each other. After marriage they settled upon a farm in their native State, and here passed the remainder of their days. The mother died when our subject was but six years of age, and the father afterward married Elizabeth Christmas. To the first marriage were born three children, all sons, and to the second marriage four children, one son and three daughters. The father was a man of great physical strength, which he retained until his death, at the age of seventy-five. Grandfather Walton was a Revolutionary soldier. Hamden O. was the eldest child by the first marriage, and was born in the year 1813, forty-five miles west of Richmond, Va. {The counties 45 miles due west of Richmond are Cumberland and Buckingham} He grew to manhood on the farm, but received a very limited education. At the age of sixteen he was placed in charge of a four-horse team, to haul produce to Richmond, at which business he continued for four years. For three years he was overseer of a plantation {the 1850 and 1860 federal census for Franklin Co., MO enumerated slaves in his household}. In 1834 he married Mary S., daughter of Rev. T. T. Swift. She was born in the same neighborhood as our subject, in the year 1815. In 1836 they came to Franklin County, and the following year they settled on the farm where thy now reside. To them were born six children: Susan A., William T., Charles S., Alva C., Andrew B. and Martha E. All the family are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Walton is a Democrat in politics, and has always been a strictly temperate man. He is now nearly seventy-five years old, has been a hard worker all his life, and is as vigorous as most men at fifty. Starting life a poor boy, he arose to the ownership of about 1,300 acres of land, of which he still retains over 700 acres. In June, 1887, he lost his faithful companion, she having been afflicted for over twenty years. For nearly forth years Mr. Walton has been a delegate to the Union United Baptist Association of Missouri, having been clerk of the same for ten years."

There is no mention of his being of German origin. I have yet to find anybody who is researching this family. Because Germans were foreigners, they left a paper trail when they entered and settled the colonies, and that makes it easier to document them. See the Bird/Bart/Barth materials cited above. I have looked into several sources that document the German migration into the colonies, including the ones researched by A. T. Skeen for his Coveys of Birds, but have not found a Walton family. The only Walton family histories I have found show their ancestors to have been British.

That Hannah Bird lived until 1868 can be seen in the following sequence of transactions by which she came into possession of her father’s land:

[There is a record for the Franklin Co. marriage of Elvira Lawson to John Crum. I have been working to see if Elvira was a daughter Mathew Lawson (he being the father and grandfather of Lawsons who married Andrew Bird's sons). Perhaps a family connection led Isoe Crum to purchase the land?]

[Also note that Hannah's daughter, Hettie Jane, married Lemuel "Letcher" Batchler, the son of James S. Batchlor and Catherine CRUM. Another family connection?]

The following are miscellaneous notes from a posting on the Bird Family Genealogy Forum [GenForum]. Included is information on another Bird family in Shenandoah Co., VA at the same time as the one covered in Coveys of Birds. They, though, resided on Smith's Creek:
