Not sure if this will help, but just in case. In the 1860 census of Centre Beat, Lauderdale Co., MS, there was listed an A. Lowenstein 53 born Bohemia, and in his household were: Josephine 53, Leopold 23, Marquis 21, Moses 18, Thersa 15 and Louis 13. Maybe Marquis was your Markus (Mark)? (In my Stewart family we have a man named Marquis de Lafayette Stewart who shows up in many records as Markus, the common southern pronunciation of Marquis, and also by his initials M.D.L.. It was a fairly common name in honor of the French Rev. War hero, much like naming a child after George Washington) Could be that if Abraham came into the USA through New Orleans that he was in MS for a while before he came to Memphis. I can not find him in later censuses. Various sources I have seen say that Elias Lowenstein came from Germany in 1854 and landed at New Orleans then came to Memphis where his two brothers were already settled. They opened a dry goods store in 1855 which became "B. Lowenstein and Brothers" in 1861. (that building is still on Main St. and currently undergoing a remodeling/resotration). Elias built a mansion at Jefferson St. and Manassas in 1890/91 which still exists. Elias died 1919, the last of his brothers to die. Abraham built a mansion on Waldran St. in 1901 which was later restored by the Long family and exists today as the Lowenstein-Long House, a bed and breakfast. There is a Lowenstein Foundation in Memphis which is non-profit grant foundation. I do not know if they have any inforation about the family, but you might try asking them.
