Just curious but do you have a copy of his death certificate? Both the Shelby County Register of Deeds and the Memphis Public Library have online death indexes covering 1942 but I don't find a Virgi RANKIN listed.

As far as newspaper stories about the fire are concerned, both the Memphis Public Library and the Tennessee State Library and Archives have Memphis period newspapers on microfilm. Personally, I would contact the Memphis Public Library (phone or email) and tell them what you seek. Contact info is:

Libraries and archives sometimes provide LIMITED research but often one has to visit in person and do the digging. Another option is to pay a local researcher to look for the info.
