all the "obits" I've looked at for that period are just a list of who died and the cause of death. So you get something like name......yellow fever and perhaps age. Two branches of my family were in Memphis in the 1850's, Only in 1866 did something like an obit appear, John Gatti, my ancestor, but in a story/ad that his youngest son had died and when the funeral was. John Gatti died in 1873, he was just listed in the death notices. But his son's announcement was on the front page. I would guess that you had to pay for anything more than a listing of deaths. I found the early city directories to be helpful in tracing my family. I wasn't sure if several were related, but they kept living together, off and on for over 30 years.
