In 1850, 1860, and 1870 Appalize Jane's place of birth is listed as Tennessee. 1880 says AL, but George's place of birth is listed as IL so obviously the info was provided by someone other than them.
What is your source for Robert being George's father? I don't find any Sutherlands in Greenville, but I do find them in Pickens Co, SC. There are also Gillilands in Pickens Co.
My gr gr gr grandfather Jeremiah Mitchell lived beside George in 1840 in Tipton Co, TN. In 1850 Jeremiah lived next to Little Berry Sutherland in Dallas Co, AR. I believe that George and Little Berry were brothers.
In 1830, Robert J Mitchell, connection to Jeremiah unknown, was living in Tipton Co, TN next to Meredith Sutherland. Jeremiah named a son Merry which I always thought was strange, but I bet that he was named after Meredith Sutherland.
