Mike--I'm also a descendant of Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Thornton and Luke Wood through their daughter Calperna Cicero Wood. I'm having pretty much the same problem you are having. The Thorntons apparently came from NC to Wilson Co., TN. My family always said that Polly's father was Perry Thornton. I can't find anyone by that name and everything really points to Seth as her father. Just recently I have been told that Seth's wife Nancy was the daughter of Rueben Poe and Elizabeth Foushee of Chatham Co. NC. We also believed that Polly was full blood Cherokee, but now it seems that the Thorntons were Cherokee and not the Poes. I have no documentation on any of this but it's somewhere to search.
I have a picture of Malissa Wood. (wonder if it's the same one you have). Also have a few others that I'll share if you like.
It's great to find others working on this line. I have struggled for 35 years to find what I have. Computer technology is great!
