Family of Charles SMITH of Wilson co. TN

According to a Wilson co. TN court case, 'Levisey Smith v. Charles Smith', Lavisa KEESEE and her husband Charles SMITH had seperated by 1839, after 46 years of marriage and eight children (of whom five were still living in 1839). Lavisa alleged that Charles had abandoned her, and that he was planning to abscomb to Arkansas with several slaves her father had willed to her. Charles answered that he had planned to live his life with her, but that Lavisa's manner had changed towards him due to reasons too painful to reveal in the court document, and she had chosen to sever ties with him. The document also states that after their marriage, Lavisa and Charles had moved from Virginia to South Carolina (where their daughter, my ancestress Polly HUDSON was born) and then to Tennessee.

Evidently, Lavisa and Charles did not reconcile. Charles moved to Missouri with one of their sons, Champ SMITH, and died there in 1850. Lavisa left a will in 1843 in Wilson co., TN after which time I presume she died. The will was witnessed by John DAVIS, and Lavisa names her heirs as William B. SMITH, Agnes GARNEY, and Polly HUDSON.

Charles SMITH appears in the 1830 Wilson co. TN as head-of-household of 1 white male under 5, 2 white males 5-9, 1 white male 10-14, 1 white male 15-19, 1 white male 70-79, 1 white female under 5, 2 white females 5-9, 1 white female 10-15, 1 white female 15-20, 1 white female 20-29, 1 white female 40-49.

The court documents pertaining to Charles and Lavisa's seperation states that they were the parents of eight children, five still living in 1839. I have identified four of their children: Champness "Champ" SMITH, Mary "Polly" SMITH HUDSON, Agnes SMITH GARNEY, and William B. SMITH.

Polly HUDSON was born Mary SMITH, called "Polly", the daughter of Charles SMITH and Lavisa KEESEE. She was born about 1795 in SC. She married Richard Ward HUDSON in 1813 in Wilson co. TN and they later moved to Mississippi.

Agnes GARNEY was probably another daughter of Charles and Lavisa. I cannot find any GARNEYs in the Wilson co. TN censuses (although there is a John GARNER in the 1820 census) so perhaps she married a man from another county.

The 1840 Wilson co. TN census shows two William SMITHS, and I do not which, if either, was the son of Charles and Lavisa. In the 1840 census appears a Champ SMITH, who is almost certainly the son of Charles and Lavisa. Champ, probably full name Champness (a common name in the KEESEE family) married Martha Sellars and moved to Miller co. MO along with his father Charles SMITH.
