Middle Tennessee including what is now Wilson County was part of North Carolina from the arrival of the earliest settlers about 1779 until 1790. In 1790 Congress, operating under the new federal Constitution, created the Territory South of the River Ohio out of lands ceded by North Carolina. In 1796 Tennesse was granted statehood.
