My original ancestors were Georg Uhrig and Eva (Weyrich - von Stein) Uhrig from the Uhrig Mill in Frankish-Crumbach of Hessen Darmstadt. They emigrated to Illinois in 1831 with 3 children (one born in Baltimore on the journey). The name was modified many ways by non-German recorders - Ourish, Urich, Urech, Uhrich and Urish (which is the name which the Green Valley Uhrig family retained, though Georg and Eva have Uhrig on their tombstone), and even a Ourique in Portuguese. The earlest record of the Uhrig family appears in the records of Lengfeld, in the shadow of the Otzberg castle in the Odenwald section of Germany. This is Hans Uhrig der Alte (1639 Gerichsschoffe) who married Barbara Lubeck in 1638. Many of the records were destroyed in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648)which devasted the southern part of Germany. Many were also lost in the bombing of Darmstadt during WW2. Though German Uhrigs still seem concentrated in the Odenwald, there is some suggestion that the very old land of origin is the Swiss Alps. Hope this is of interest to you. Regards, Daniel W.
