Maybe this Mahala and Joseph are children of my Joseph Upthegrove and Mahala Mannering??? From census records, I have birth years of 1790-1794 for Joseph and about 1797 for Mahala. They were married October 23, 1815 in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
Early census records suggest this family included an unknown male born between 1816 and 1819 (this could be the Joseph you mentioned), unknown female 1816-1819 (possibly Mahala?), unknown male 1820-1825 and another unknown male 1826-1829. The 1850 Census names Nancy 1829, Elisha 1832-1833, Daniel 1833, James R. 1838, Harvey 1839, Elizabeth 1840 and Lucy 1841, and two stepbrothers (listed below) all in the household of their stepmother.
Mahala died between 1841 when Lucy was born, and January 7, 1846 when Joseph married Sally Brock (a widow) in Lincoln County. Joseph and Sally had two sons, Samuel 1846 and Enoch 1848. Joseph died sometime between 1848 and 1850 (before the census was taken.)
My GtGt-Grandfather is Elisha, the son of Joseph and Mahala.
