Hi Chuck,
The one roster to which I have access does not list a James Hicks in Co. K (Wm. H. Patterson's Company), 5th Tennessee. However, there are two Hicks' listed in Company C. They are:
Andrew J. Hicks, 22, private, enlisted in Athens
Asberry (Asbury) H. Hicks, 20, private (promoted to sergeant), enlisted in Athens
The source of this is a great little book on the campaign of the 5th Tennessee in the Mexican War:
Edwards, R.M. (Steward Lillard, ed.) 'Down the Tennessee,' The Mexican War Reminiscences of an East Tennessee Volunteer which appeared in the Knoxville Tribune between January 24th and March 17, 1895. Charlotte: Steward Lillard, 1997.
Another obscure little book dealing with the 5th is:
"To the Halls of Montezuma: Samuel Vance Fulkerson's Journal Kept During the Mexican War." (Abingdon, VA: Historical Society of Washington County, 1992).
