John McIntosh, doctor from Maine-Died Baton Rouge-Need military information

I have John McIntosh born Scotland. His children were all born in Maine prior to 1850. Family history says that he was a doctor in the Mexican War and died of Yellow Fever contracted from treating patients in Baton Rouge. His family was still in East Baton Rouge until after 1860. I wonder how to find information on his war participation and whether his family received or applied for his pension.
