I am hoping someone can clarify the situation surrounding the newspaper abstract below:

SPERRY is listed as having died-- National Archives:

Jacob F. SPERRY 2nd LT CO F 2nd PA Inv
Age 23 years

Then I found that he requested discharge and was so discharged by Major Scott Aug 7 1847 and then the article below.

Can anyone enlighten me on WHY he would have requested discharge on that date and what the ensuing battle was discussed in the newspaper article?

"The first of our troubles commenced the 25th of August(1847) when a large ? of the enemies cavalry suddenly apeared in sight and succeeded in capturing and driving off several hundred of our mules, from a pasture field in the neighborhood. A party of twenty-six men, chiefly teamsters, immediately armed themselves, and mounted some miserable horses, for the purpose of recapturing the mules. They had scarcely been gone an hour before they were surrounded by a large body of lancers and almost annilhilated. Ten were killed on the spot, two or three were severly wounded, and a few taken prisoner. The bodies of the killed were brought in by Mexicans employed by the Quartermaster, in the evening, and exhibited the usual evidences of Mexican brutality. They were stripped of all their clothing and lacerated in the most shocking manner. Capt Bronough, formerly of the Baltimore battalion and lately Postmaster here; Lieut. Jacob F. Sperry. lately of Capt Naylor's corps,of the 2nd PA volunteers, were among the killed."
