I did considerable research on the family Vagt in the late 80's, early 90's. Part of this research was telephone books in Germany. I do not dispute that the name could be a corruption of a Dutch name but since the advent of the internet you will find it all over the place in Denmark which has no roots in the Germanic language at all. In searching the German phone books I did find an interesting anomoly...VAGT was prominent in northern Germany, whereas VOGT (which is a German noun) is prominent in southern Germany. I have primary documentation for my ancestors originating from Bremen and Stuhr. There is a whole line of Jacob Vagts. Since I deadended in Stuhr I will soon take it back up searching in Oldenburg and Hamburg. Probably try sticking with the Hanseatic states since Bremen, Hamburg, and Denmark where such in this trading empire. Family has no notables that I have found but would like to continue it if possible.
