"The Varnums of Dracut" by John Marshall Varnum (David Clapp and Son, Boston, 1907)shows Mary Butler Varnum as the daughter of James Mitchell Varnum (8/2/1786 - 9/11/1821) and Mary Pease (3/5/1783 - 9/11/1847). They were married 3/5/1811 in Washington, DC. Mary Pease was the daughter of Major Augistine Pease of Sheffield, CT. James Mitchell Varnum was born in Dracut, MA and died in Washington, DC. The genealogy givesno place of birth for Mary Butler, but her father was in Washington in 1808 where he held a position under the Postmaster General. I could send you copies of the information in the genealogy if you will send me your address. I can be reached by email at stitchingwitch@lycos.com.
