Ernest,
Mary Scroggins is the easier of the 2 about whom to talk. Mary was b: 11/24/1745, most likely in Somerset Co., MD, to Joseph Scroggins b: abt 1715 Worcester Co., MD, d: 1/11/1773 Somerset Co., MD, and Sarah Ann Caldwell b: 1724 in Somerset Co., MD. Joseph m: 7/7/1740 in Somerset Co., MD. I have a few more generations of Mary’s pedigree. They are available on-line.
Revel Wharton b: about 1747 in Lancaster Co. VA.. According to DAR records Capt Revel Wharton m: Mary about 1763. Capt Revel was on the rolls of the USS Defense before the War, was later Captain of a privateer engaged in smuggling contraband through the British blockade to the rebel patriots, was finally captured by the British and died on board a British prison ship.
Revel and Mary had at least the following children:
Lindsay b: abt 1766-7
Nancy ?
Sarah b: 9/26/1768, m: Elisha English
Jane ?
After the War the widow Mary (Scroggins) Wharton, with children and probably some friends, migrated to KY. She is said to have married 2ndly, a brother of Daniel Boone.
Revel is a little more difficult. There were 2 Revels in the same family line and the first may have been your Revel’s father, but I believe he was probably his uncle. The 1st Revel was born about 1705 in Lancaster Co., VA, to Thomas Wharton b: abt 1680 in Accomack Co., VA and Mary Miller. They m: abt 1699. Thomas outlived his first 2 children. His will was recorded 12/10/1742. He and Mary had at least the following:
Thomas, JR.
Revel b: bet 1705/7
Joseph , the heir
Ann b: abt 1710, m: Lewis Conner
Sarah b: abt 1714
Ellison b: abt 1718
Thomas’ son Revel is thought by some, to be the father of your Capt Revel, but I believe that his true father is the 1705 Revel’s brother, Joseph, the heir.
Revel b: abt 1705/7 in Lancaster Co., VA, m: Bridget Custis daughter of Henry Custis. Revel died very suddenly during the winter of 1740-41 and intestate. At this point it is unknown if there were any children.
Joseph, Revel’s brother, b: abt 1709 in Lancaster Co., VA. On 6/4/1737 he m: Ann Edmonds b: 1715. Joseph’s will was recorded 5/12/1749. In the will he mentions wife Ann and the following children:
Thomas b: abt 1939
Giles b: abt1742
William b: abt 1743
Joseph, Jr b: abt 1745
Lindsay b: abt 1746
Revel b: abt 1747
Note that Capt Revel Wharton also named a son Lindsay.
Revel and Joseph’s father, Thomas’ parents were Francis Wharton b: abt 1640 and Elizabeth Wellbourne b: abt 1655, daughter of Thomas Wellbourne. Francis was most likely b: in England and his parents are unknown.
Regards, Dave
