from a biographical sketch on Elmer Elsworth Oldaker who was the son of Francis M. & Sarah M. (Bruce) Oldaker...The father of Sarah (Bruce) Oldaker...was Henry H. Bruce. Henry H. Bruce was a blacksmith by trade. He was married to Mary McClellan Wharton in 1825. He died at the old home south of Pennville in 1871. Mary M. Wharton...was the daughter of Richard Wharton, was born in Clark County, Kentucky, in 1807 and came with her parents to Indiana in 1814. They entered the farm which is now the home of Mrs Margaret Coffman (Kaufman) where they lived until the death of Mr Wharton, in 1854. He was born in Fredericksburg, Va., in 1766, and drove a commissary wagon in the later years of the Revolutionary war. His ancestors were of Scotch descent. He migrated to Kentucky when twenty-three years of age. He married Mary McClellan in 1787. She was born in Guilford County, North Carolina and was of Irish descent. Her parents died when she was four years old and she was reared by William Scott, brother of her mother.

No official record of Richard Wharton's Rev War service has ever been found.

Richard Wharton died Sep 18, 1854 and is buried in the Franklin Cemetery beside his wife, Mary McClellan Wharton who was born Jun 3, 1770 and died Aug 19, 1842.

Their first child that we know of was Sarah "Sally" Wharton born Jul 6. 1794 Clark Co, Ky. She married Aaron Mannon Nov 1, 1810 in Clark Co, Ky. The marriage record says Aaron Manion to Sally Warten. She died prior to 1830 census.

Second child, Rice Wharton was born about 1796 Clark Co, Ky. He married Jul 6, 1820 in Wayne Co, Ind to Nancy McKee. He died prior to the 1850 census.

Third child, Samuel Wharton born was born 1799 Clark Co, Ky. He married Dec 23 1824 to Nancy McKee and Dec 10, 1835 to Maria[h] McKee - both in Wayne Co, Ind. He died prior to the 1860 census.

Fourth child, America Wharton was born about 1803 Clark Co, Ky. She was living with her sister, Emily Swisher on the 1870 census of Warren Co, Ind. She was listed as being deaf and dumb.

Fifth child, Mary McClellan Wharton "Polly" was born about 1807 in Clark Co, Ky. She married Feb 17, 1825 in Wayne Co, Ind to Henry Bruce. She died in 1882.

Sixth child, James Wharton

Seventh child, Emily "Milly" Wharton was born about 1809 in Clark Co, Ky. She married Jun 18, 1829 William Swisher in Wayne Co, Ind. Lived in Warren Co, Ind near the Scott relatives.


Will of Richard Wharton, Wayne Co, Ind, Book 3 page 294. Written 1852 and probated 1854.
I, Richard Wharton, being in my 76th year but still of sound mind, do make this my last will and testament.
First, funeral expenses and debts should be paid.
To oldest son Samuel Wharton, the home place 90 acres, SW 1/4 section 29 twp 16 range 13 east.
Remainder of Real Estate 18 68/100 acres to be sold and proceeds divided between two daughters, America Wharton and Polly Bruce, late Polly Wharton.
To heirs of late son Rice Wharton dec'd, each $1.00, he having been given his share while living.
To daughters of Sally S. Manning, late Sally S. Wharton, dec'd, $1.00 each, she having her share while living.
To youngest son, James Wharton $1.00 his share having been taken care of.
Any personal property or money to be divided between 3 daughters, America L. Wharton, Polly Bruce late Polly Wharton and Milly C. Swisher, late Milly C. Wharton.
Witnesses: A.S. Luse, Jacob A. Scrvior?, Hiram McMurry, Solomon Waltz, Dr E. Swalb.
