I will reply to this old posting. I think your John Whorton married Martha Ann McWhirt 12 Feb 1801 in Spotsylvania Co, VA. They are on the 1810 census there. John Whorton is listed as "Jr." even tho there is no John Sr. listed.
I think your John Whorton, along with a Leonard Whorton, moved from Spotsylvania Co to Garrard Co, KY. Leonard remained there for the 1820 and 1830 census, but is found in Howard Co, MO, for the 1840 census.
I am uncertain what happened to your John Whorton. Am thinking he may have remained in KY, but pure speculation.
Want to find out if your John Whorton and my Leonard Whort were brothers. Any help appreciated.
