Thank you for your information. I found john w. wharton on the 1850 census in Highland Co Ohio, but he could have moved on to Missouri. I couldn't find him listed on any church records in Iowa, where his daughter married my ggrandfather. After my ggrandfather's obiturary in 1921, I couldn't find any mention of him, until I found his grave in Calif when searching for my ggrandmothers grave.
I will follow up with the M.E. Methodist church in Missouri. I still know nothing about him.
