At his room in the Union House yesterday afternoon at one o'clock Ethan Allan, of this city, breathed his last. He was a familiar character and had resided in Janesville for the past forty years. He served his country during the war of the rebellion and was a member of the Thrid Wisconsin Cavalry. When he returned home after the war his constitution was badly impaired, which rendered him unfit for heavy manual duties. He did what he could, however, in the way of light work. Some years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and was sent to the Soldiers Home in Milwaukee. He returned to Janesville last winter, having received $200 back pension, and has resided hereafter since. His illness was of short duration and was the result of a cold contracted a few days ago. The news of his death was therefore a surprise to his friends. Mr. Allan was fifty-five years old at the time of his death. His wife preceded him to the other world some time ago. He leaves two brothers, Henr and Wes Allan, of this city. Although not a member of any Grand Army post he will be buried under the auspices of W.H. Sargent Post No. 20, of this city. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the place not yet having been agreed upon, but notice will be given tomorrow morning.

Janesville Recorder and Times, Thurs, April 18, 1895. Page6:1.

I also found a Lydia and Wesley having probate files, however, they are in Whitewater which would require a 20 minute drive if you are interested in those, let me know.

Our library also had an index card with the death of Mrs. Henry Allen Dec 27, 1897, dying in Nebraska. I looked it up and the micro film is unreadable. The historical society in Madison would have a copy of the newspaper, Janesville Gazette and in would posted Jan. 3, 1898, page 2 col. 3.
