Mexican War

There is a bronze grave marker by my husband's Great-great-grandfather James Daniel Phelps tombstone in the Plymouth WI Union Cemetery - a wreath with a star in the center and 1848 at the bottom. I believe that this indicates that he served in the Mexican War. I would like to know what organization would have placed the marker by the grave. I hope that contacting them may provide the unit in which he served.
