I recently obtained a copy of my grandfather's social security application. I was hoping it would clear up questions, but it made things worse: This is what he wrote on his 26 May 1937 Application: Name: OTTO FRIED HUSTING (sometime after his marriage in 1908, he changed his name from Hurtienne to Husting). Date of Birth: August 17, 1882 Age at Last Birthday: 54 Place of Birth: Sheboygan, WI Father's Full Name: William Husting Mother's Full Maiden Name: Annie Lorenz Here's my problem: I have his parents marriage certificate. Married in Sheboygan, 31 Dec 1884, names, ANNA MUELLER and FRIEDRICH WILHELM HURTIENNE. Witness: Carl Hurtienne. I have the naturalization paper for OTTO HURTIENNE that says he was born in Germany, emmigrated to the US and landed in the port of New York on or about May 1883. This was signed in Milwaukee, WI, Dec. 15 1905. I have Otto's father's naturalization paper also. It's from Sheboygan, WI, and dated 26 Sept 1906. The name on the paper is WILHELM HURTIENNE. Why would my grandfather give his father's and mother's name as so different from what it really was? And why would he say he was born in Sheboygan and not Germany? My grandfather had 2 siblings: AGNES and WILLIAM HURTIENNE. WILLIAM had a son by the name of MELVIN HURTIENNE. If anyone can help me understand any of this I would be very greatful.
