RANDOLPH - Merta Elizabeth Wakefield, 91, died Dec. 4, 2003, in Bennington. She was born May 9, 1912, in East Bethel, the daughter of Clayton and Lida (Buck) Wight. She was educated in East Bethel, South Royalton High School and Castleton Normal School, where she received her teaching degree. She married Arthur M. Wakefield on Nov. 28, 1933, in Bethel. He died in 1986. They lived in West Brookfield from 1933 until 1946, when they moved to Randolph. Mrs. Wakefield taught grade school for 30 years in South Randolph, South Royalton, West Braintree, Rochester Hollow and Randolph. She was a member of the United Church in Randolph, Beulah Chapter 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Middle Branch Grange for 70 years, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers, and Vermont Mother of the Year in 1984. She enjoyed her family, camping, reading and traveling. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Brown of Shaftsbury, and Maydene Mort of Bennington; five sons, David A. Wakefield of Randolph, Richard L. Wakefield of St. Albans, William M. Wakefield of Windsor, Duane W. Wakefield of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and LeRoy Wakefield of East Barre; two sisters, Merle Morse of Barre and Mildred Ford of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a brother, Howard Wight; and two sisters, Marian Button and Martha Wight. The funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Wotton of the United Church in Randolph officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in West Brookfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. An Eastern Star service will take place at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star, in care of Doris Graves, 29 Highland Ave., Randolph, or the United Church Memory Fund, in care of United Church, Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060.
