Hi Gillian,
I'm not reaaly sure when the spelling changed, but would guess in the mid 17th century. One, possibly victorian document suggests this approxamite date, but in all the copies of probate documents dating from 1579 I have purchased the letter "i" is used. Where were your Wilkins from? What other names were/are connected to them?
