Families in Maine, 1700's to 1900's

Hello. I'd just like to say that I'm still interested in the WILKINS families who lived in "Maine" during the 1700's. (Maine didn't became a State until 1820.)

My ancestor is Samuel WILKINS who was reportedly born in "Maine" in ~1780. No one knows who his parents were. But, I have an "educated guess." I believe they were William and Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS who lived in Middleton, MA, and moved to "Maine" in ~1776.

Several "town history books" show William was in towns along the Kennebec River during the 1770's, in Pittston, ME, during the 1780's. So, he could have fathered a child in ~1780. He was still in the area in 1792, but is not mentioned after that. One books said that he probably lost his wife before 1785, so one guess is that Sarah died as a result of childbirth in ~1780.

Samuel seems to have married ~1800, probably in that same area. He and his family were in Unity, ME, in 1810, 1820, and 1830 census. They moved to Amity, ME, ~1832. Their 2 youngest children, Mary and George married near Amity in 1834 and 1838. I have not been able to tell whether the 2 oldest sons, Samuel, Jr., and Almon, had already married in Unity; they could have. (I am missing one daughter.)

...
There were other WILKINS men in "Maine" in 1780's to 1800, including William's brother, David, in Lewiston. And, an Edward north of Bangor. And other men arrived in mid 1800's.

That's all I'll say for now. I have posted most of my findings on the Mailing Lists at www.rootsweb.com
So, you can check the archives of the Maine and MA Lists for more details.
