The parents of John Woodyard who married Mary Guibert of Maryland are the immigrant Richard Woodyard who married Elizabeth Tyler on 14 January 1705 in Eriswell, Suffolk, England where John was born in 1707; Elizabeth was born 14 May 1685 in Norwich, Norfolk, daughter of Thomas and Martha (Copman) Tyler. Richard and Elizabeth, with infant son John, immigrated in 1709, settling in Charles County, Maryland with his siblings John Woodyard Jr. (married Mrs. Jane Browne Newton, daughter of Gerrard Browne and widow of Richard Newton) and Elizabeth Breat, wife of George. Richard Woodyard had eight more children in Maryland.
