Were birth certs needed during WWI to show proof of person?

Hi There! My Grandfather was in WWI. He was born in Texas in 1885. Would he have needed to provide proof of birth in order to enlist during WWI? The following is his draft registration card information:

Name: Frank Hoerster
County: Valley
State: Montana
Birth Date: 6 Dec 1885
Race: White
NOK = Mrs. A .T. Miller = mother
signed 9/12/18

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
