How to Find a Service Number (USNRF WW1)
Posted by: Bret Maxwell (ID *****5527) Date: September 24, 2009 at 07:55:12

I have learned from a cemetery transcription that my grandfather has a military marker that reads "TX AS USNRF WW1". I would like to order his military records from the National Archives using SF-180, however it seems that "Service Number" is the key to a successful search. How do I go about finding someone's service number?

Can an SF-180 be sent in without a service number?

Also, does anyone know what "AS" means in "TX AS USNRF WW1"? I believe it was his rank or position in the USNRF, but I have not been able to match it up to any of the WW1 Navy abbreviations I have found on the web.

Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
