Thanks for the reply, although Black German and Black Irish are supposed to be american terms, I am finding this probably also refers to "Southern" Germans in the Black Forest and Bavaria areas who were mixed in with Italian(they overran Western Europe and the British Isles a couple of times through history) and possibly Spanish(The Black Forest areas were occupied by Spanish at one time). I have found my gggrandfather's name in two census' from Catasauqua(by Bethlehem and Allentown). Am trying to tie him to Native American, but one person said "We called them Black Dutch because they were Pennsylvania Dutch and were dark". I may never know. My husband is "Black Irish" so I will have to try and figure that out too!
